A Sydney Morning Herald journalist has asked – “Here’s a fun question for you: how long before death would you fancy some time off?” Well, I’m now in my mid-70s and am still working, and have no real plans for retirement yet. In many ways I am lucky because I am a professional and can continue to work in semi-retirement, from home, in my own hours. Technology has enabled me to run a business via the internet, and I have clients Australia-wide.
However I appreciate that there are many people my age in ill-health, or have had manual jobs that have caused them to retire earlier. There are also others who are in a good financial position and able to retire and enjoy travel etc.
Whatever a person’s situation, most people my age have worked for many years, contributing to society and paying their taxes, and deserve to be better rewarded for their efforts.
